Pakistan has always faced threats from different directions, especially from its eastern neighbor, India. One of the most serious concerns has been the activities of India’s intelligence agency, RAW (Research and Analysis Wing), inside Pakistani territory. A recent case shows just how real and dangerous this threat is. According to a press conference held by Karachi police, four local fishermen have been arrested for spying for RAW. This is not just a simple case of breaking the law; this is a serious attack on Pakistan’s national security.
These fishermen were not ordinary men doing their job honestly. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shoaib Mehmood Memon from the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) in Karachi, they were working with Indian intelligence handlers. They were not only taking photos and videos of sensitive places in the Malir district of Karachi but also sending this material to Indian agents. They became the subjects of money, alcohol, and weapons in turn. This indicates that this was a clear and calculated attempt by the RAW to acquire some vital information that was capable of causing damage to Pakistan.
The security forces of Pakistan responded fast and with responsibilities. These arrests came through a combined effort of the police and the intelligence agencies. This indicates the good organizational control of various wings of the security apparatus in Pakistan. It also shows that Pakistan is vigilant and aggressive when it comes to protecting her against external aggression. Had they not had time to capture these suspects, then the sensitive information that these suspects had gathered could have been utilized in planning of attacks or sabotage of important places.
One needs to know that RAW was not involved in this kind of activity at the first time. India has past experiences of interfering with internal affairs of Pakistan with its intelligence branches. This can be well highlighted by the case of Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav who was arrested in 2016 after being caught in Balochistan. He admitted that he was employed at RAW and was promoting unrest and terrorism in Pakistan. The whole world knows his case and it was even presented at the International Court of Justice. The statement Jadhav made under confession along with the evidences which were found against him is enough to show that RAW has been in operation in Pakistan since years.
Such events are not only isolated ones. They form a larger scheme of undermining Pakistan internally. RAW has also preferred spying on locals through providing them with cash or other gratifications. During the recent incident in Karachi, the suspects were said to be provided with more than the money as liquor and weapons were also provided to them. This is an open attempt at causing instability in Pakistan by applying financial and social resources so as to make people of Pakistan against their nation. However brave police officers and intelligence officials of Pakistan are on standby to highlight these conspiracy plans.
The other significant component is that such activities of India indicate its negligence of international legislations and neighborliness. It is not only morally bad but also illegal according to the international law to spy and interfere with internal affairs of another country. Countries are supposed to honor the sovereignty of the other nations, yet India by use of RAW has indicated time and again that it is not keen to abide by these rules. This not only has a poor impact on the relationship between the two countries but also adds the tension in the region. India is trying to destroy Pakistan instead of bringing peace at any cost using secretive means.
The role of local people in such cases is also very important to highlight. Most Pakistanis are loyal and patriotic but just a few could be misguided by money or greed. They should not only ensure that all citizens are aware and take care to report any suspicious activity. It is not just the army or the police of the country, but also the people, which can be strong through their unity and awareness. When we are united then none of our enemies will manage to destroy our nation.
Pakistan has never believed in war or hostile relationship with the neighbors. However, there is no peace by looking down threats. Our government, military, and police are well informed of the threats that such agencies as the RAW have on us and they are trying their best to prevent them. The detention of the four fishermen in Karachi is an evidence of our robustness and defense to our mother land.
India is still trying to attack Pakistan through illegal and confidential methods as evidenced by the recent arrests that have happened in Karachi of India RAW members. They are however countering these acts successfully thanks to our brave and competent security organs. Public of Pakistan had a right to be proud and feel safe since they know that they are being defended 24 hours a day, every day. Meanwhile, each citizen should also be alert and to assist law enforcement agencies. The united nation that we are can overcome any obstacle and keep Pakistan safe, strong and sovereign.
