The 13 March 2026 incident again reflected the endemic security challenge that Pakistan is experiencing along its western border. The Afghanistan Taliban released a few crudely made drones that day to harass the citizens of Pakistan and create an environment of fear and uncertainty. Luckily, there were strong defence mechanisms that came into action promptly in Pakistan. A mixture of soft and hard countermeasures prevented these drones before they could hit their targets. Although the interception prevented what could have been a much more tragic event, the landing debris had an unfortunate outcome of injuring innocent civilians, two children in Quetta and one civilian in Kohat and Rawalpindi.
These events highlight a disturbing fact that the danger of terrorism and the use of asymmetric strategies across the border is a significant issue to the national security of Pakistan. The tactic of using homemade drones to threaten the civilian population is not a mere tactical move, it is also a sign of an attitude based on coercion and psychological warfare. The perpetrators aimed at intimidating the ordinary Pakistanis by trying to attack civilian premises to shatter the confidence that people had in peace and stability. These acts carry a distinct mark of the terrorist tactics that are more about disrupting and causing panic than any political goal.
What is especially worrying is the inconsistency in the story of the authorities in Kabul. At the global level, the Afghan Taliban tend to rebrand themselves as victims of the geopolitical forces to gain the sympathy and involvement of the international community. However, other acts like the recent drone attacks tell a very different story. The civilians being targeted, be it via proxies, cross-border intrusion or even the primitive drone attacks are directly opposed to the purported responsible governance. To Pakistan, such activities reinforce the age old worries of the existence and encouragement of militant groups that are based on the Afghan territory.
Pakistan has reiterated several times that it is in the best interest of the region as a whole to have stability in Afghanistan. A harmonious Afghanistan will be a gateway that will connect the Central Asia with South Asia and the rest of the world. Nevertheless, all these possibilities will rely on the Afghan government to take bold measures against terrorist groups that keep posing threats to the neighboring states. Cross-border attacks undermine trust when they take place and put obstacles on the same cooperation that might be of advantage to the two countries.
To curb the ongoing terrorism threat, Pakistan has initiated the operation Ghazab-lil-Haq, which is a comprehensive national operation that is meant to combat militant activities and protect the sovereignty of the country. The operation itself is not just a military mission but a larger scope of operation of ensuring the population of Pakistan of all types of terrorism and intimidation. Its targets are obvious: to destroy terrorist groups, to prevent cross-border aggression, and to make sure that those, who want to destabilize Pakistan, will be firmly and effectively responded to.
The recent drone attack is the evidence of the need of such vigilance. The fact that the defensive strategies of Pakistan managed to intercept the drones before they could land on their target destinations is an indication of how ready and professional the security institutions of the country are. The contemporary security threats are more and more characterized by unconventional approaches such as drones, cyber threats and hybrid warfare approaches. Pakistan has the capacity to react to these threats in terms of technology and operational preparedness which is one of the significant elements of national defense.
The strength of Pakistani people is equally important. The efforts to threaten civilians by occasional attacks or provocations are not going to break the spirit of a nation that has been facing decades of terrorism and became stronger every time. The fact that innocent civilians, and in particular, children, are injured is a bitter remedy of the human cost of those actions. But they also strengthen the will of Pakistani society to remain united in the fight against the people who want to generate fear.
The Armed Forces of Pakistan have over and over again proved that they are right there with the rest of the country in addressing these challenges. They are not going to relent in their mission of safeguarding the territorial integrity and nationality of its citizens. The message has been received in the light of provocation like the drone incidents of 13 March; Pakistan will keep on defending itself through resolve and professionalism.
Finally, the responsibility of all the stakeholders is the only way to achieve long term peace in the region. The government of Afghanistan needs to work on the fundamental issue that Pakistan has with the issue of terrorism that is spawned within the nation of Afghanistan. Trust can only start to rebuild by making plausible actions against militant groups and thwarting cross-border aggression. The stability in the region cannot be attained by mere rhetoric, but it requires practical measures that would show that they are dedicated to peace.
Unless these assurances are realized, the security institutions in Pakistan will be on alert. Operation Ghazab-lil-Haq will be extended as long as needed to protect the country and in order to prevent the threats of terrorist networks and facilitators. Pakistan has demonstrated that it will never compromise when it comes to defending its citizens.
The March 13 happened as a reminder that provocations can be of various types, such as infiltrations and drones, yet the reaction of Pakistan is the same. The nation will not be afraid of intimidation. Rather it will be protecting its citizens, its sovereignty, and strive to have a future where peace and security is the order of the day in the region.
