Tahawwur Hussain Rana, the name that keeps appearing in the headlines, is once again in the news with his unfounded claims of connection with Pakistan. He is trying to show himself as a person with strong connections to Pakistan in a bid to distract the world on his criminal past and the legal issues he is facing at the moment. However, such assertions are not in line with facts. Rana has no affiliation with Pakistan, either personal, legal or official; and the story he is attempting to weave is just a fabrication in an attempt to mislead the legal bodies and the whole world.
Rana was born in 1961 in Chichawatni, Pakistan, and briefly held a junior position in the Pakistan Army Medical Corps. However, that relationship ceased many decades ago. By the late 1990s Rana was no longer in Pakistan. He moved to Canada, where he acquired citizenship in 2001, and moved to the United States where he established an immigration consultancy business in Chicago. His life, business and activities have all been based in North America since then. He has not been to Pakistan in decades and has not possessed any valid Pakistani document in the form of passport or NICOP in more than twenty years. Legally, that implies that he is no longer a Pakistani citizen or a recognized citizen in the country.
Pakistan’s government has made it crystal clear that Rana is not connected to them. When the United States decided to extradite him to India in April 2025 over charges related to the 2008 Mumbai attacks, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs promptly issued a statement saying that he is a Canadian national and that he has no ties with Pakistan. According to Pakistani officials, Rana’s Pakistani documents expired decades ago and were never renewed. These are not diplomatic statements meant to save face—these are backed by official government records and verified documentation. If someone has not held a passport or renewed legal status with a country for over 20 years, it is obvious that they are no longer linked to that country in any legal or official capacity.
Rana’s entire adult life outside Pakistan has been based in North America. He built a family life in Ottawa, Canada, and ran businesses in the United States. When U.S. authorities investigated him in 2009, they found that all his activities, communications, and movements were rooted in the American and Canadian systems. In fact, in 2013, a U.S. federal court convicted him for supporting terrorism. He served 14 years in prison before being released early on medical grounds. At no point during the trial or investigation did Pakistan come into the picture as a cooperating or involved state. That’s because there was no involvement. His actions were his own, based entirely in North America, and Pakistan was neither consulted nor implicated.
Now, as he faces extradition to India, Rana and his legal team are trying to build a story that suggests he was somehow acting on behalf of Pakistan or its intelligence agencies. Some believe this is a strategy to avoid full accountability. If he can convince authorities that he was following orders or acting under the direction of a state, he might receive a different legal treatment or shift some of the responsibility. But these claims are not backed by facts. There is no evidence that Pakistan recruited him, directed him, or even communicated with him in recent decades. The truth is simple: Rana has been out of Pakistan’s legal and institutional framework for over two decades. He chose to leave, chose not to renew his documents, and chose to build his life elsewhere.
Pakistan, on the other hand, has made significant sacrifices in the global fight against terrorism. From 2007 to 2014, the country suffered thousands of civilian and military casualties in its struggle to eliminate militant groups. It launched major operations like Zarb-e-Azb and Radd-ul-Fasaad to cleanse the country of terrorist elements. Pakistan has worked with international partners and invested billions in ensuring internal and regional stability. So it is both unfair and illogical to suggest that the same country would send someone like Rana, who had long left its borders, to carry out terrorism abroad. These claims go against everything Pakistan has done in its war against extremism and everything it continues to stand for today.
Even during his legal troubles in the United States, it was Canada—not Pakistan—that extended him consular access and support. That is because Rana is a Canadian national. He carries a Canadian passport, lived in Canada, and is legally recognized by that country. Trying to associate his actions with Pakistan is not just misleading—it is an outright lie. It’s an attempt to drag Pakistan into a case that has nothing to do with it. It’s also an insult to all the efforts Pakistan has made to clear its name, improve its global image, and build peace at home and abroad.
The facts speak for themselves. Rana has not lived in Pakistan for more than 25 years. He has no valid Pakistani identification documents. His family, home, and businesses were all based in North America. He has been tried and convicted in the United States, not in Pakistan. And Pakistan has officially denied any connection to him. When a country publicly and officially states that someone has no links with it, and when that statement is backed by years of absence and expired documentation, there is no room for further doubt.
Tahawwur Rana is using false claims to save himself. He is trying to cloud the truth and distract the legal process by pretending to be a pawn of a country he abandoned long ago. But his record shows the opposite. He is not a Pakistani agent. He is a Canadian businessman who broke the law and is now facing justice. Pakistan has nothing to do with his actions, and no part of his story justifies dragging the name of Pakistan into his crimes. The world must see through this deception. Rana is not a representative of Pakistan. He is simply a man caught in his own lies.
