Pakistan Detains Hundreds from Imran Khan’s Party Amid Failing Protests
Pakistan detains PTI members as protests for Imran Khan falter. Emergency rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa sparks unrest.
POLICY WIRE — Peshawar, Pakistan — Pakistani authorities have arrested hundreds of members from former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), as demonstrations supporting the jailed leader show signs of weakening.
The arrests followed the federal government’s declaration of emergency rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, a stronghold of Khan’s party, after large-scale protests demanded his release. Officials confirmed that 278 PTI supporters had been detained since the emergency was declared on Sunday, October 11, 2026.
Security measures have intensified in Peshawar, with police in riot gear and barriers blocking access to key areas. Schools were closed, and internet disruptions were reported. Despite calls for renewed protests, only small groups gathered, signaling a decline in public support for the movement.
