Pakistan Blocks Capital Access with 1,500 Shipping Containers to Prevent Imran Khan Supporters
Pakistan uses 1,500 shipping containers to block access to Islamabad, preventing Imran Khan supporters from entering ahead of a protest.
POLICY WIRE — Karachi, Pakistan — Pakistani authorities have deployed over 1,500 shipping containers to block access to the capital city of Islamabad, aiming to prevent supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan from entering the city ahead of a planned protest.
The move comes as the country’s government intensifies security measures in preparation for an October 4 demonstration organized by Khan’s Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) party. The effort has resulted in a significant buildup of containers at Karachi’s main port, located over 1,400 kilometers away, causing logistical challenges for truckers and transport companies.

Authorities have also restricted highway access to Islamabad, using the containers to create physical barriers. The operation is costing the government approximately 46 million rupees per day, transforming the city into a fortified zone. PTI leaders continue to push for Khan’s release, as tensions remain high between the opposition and the ruling administration.
