POLICY WIRE — Bend, Oregon — Authorities have yet to establish a clear motive behind the tragic school shooting carried out by a suspect from Bend, though investigators have not clarified whether he had any prior affiliation with the institution.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz revealed during a Thursday evening press conference that the young children who lost their lives in the attack were ages 5, 8, and 11.
Online fundraisers and a social media statement published by his father have identified the youngest victim, the 5-year-old child who died, as Rhoam Summer.
In addition to the fatalities, two other individuals sustained critical injuries and required hospitalization, including a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher.
According to Chief Krantz, the armed assailant forced his way into the facility by shooting at locked doors before being intercepted by a courageous bystander who engaged and killed him.
On Friday, relatives of the bystander released an official statement identifying him as Kaylub Giamanco, a local Bend resident and father of two daughters who are enrolled at Silver Rail Elementary School.
He is not seeking recognition, but instead wishes to express his gratitude to the first responders, school personnel, and community for the outpouring of love and support, the family said.
Law enforcement officials reported that officers arrived at the scene within minutes of receiving emergency 911 calls from the campus, where they discovered the dead gunman and multiple victims inside.
