Meta Internal Chats Reveal Lula Instagram Accounts Faced Restrictions During Brazil Election
Meta employees privately acknowledged restrictions impacted Brazilian President Lula's Instagram accounts during the election, sparking fierce debate.
POLICY WIRE — Sao Paulo, Brazil — Internal communications at Meta reveal that staff members acknowledged the Instagram accounts of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva suffered negative impacts from platform restrictions.
The disclosures emerged following accusations from Lula’s campaign team, which charged the tech conglomerate with electoral interference after his social media content and ad accounts were allegedly blocked ahead of the presidential runoff.
In response to the mounting pressure, Brazil’s superior electoral court, the TSE, issued a directive requiring Meta to detail every measure applied profile by profile to the official accounts of Lula while also demanding an explanation for video metric anomalies.
Meta’s Brazil office firmly rejected the accusations of interference, labeling the claims from the campaign as simply false and unsupported by the facts.
The company further clarified in statements to AFP that many of the technical glitches cited did not exclusively impact Brazil or individual targeted accounts, while emphasizing adherence to local electoral regulations.
