OpenAI arrests employee for planting hidden listening device in San Francisco office. FBI involved in investigation.
POLICY WIRE — San Francisco, United States — A former OpenAI employee has been taken into custody by the FBI after a concealed audio recording device was discovered inside one of the company’s offices in San Francisco. The incident has raised concerns about internal security at one of the leading artificial intelligence firms.
The suspect, identified as Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national and former engineer at OpenAI, was arrested on Friday and charged with using a device to intercept oral communications. Federal prosecutors confirmed the arrest, which followed an internal investigation by the company that led to the discovery of the hidden equipment.
OpenAI reported the incident to law enforcement and immediately terminated the employee’s access to its systems. The company also stated that it used its own AI models to trace the origin of the device and identify the individual responsible. The case underscores growing security challenges faced by major AI companies handling sensitive data and proprietary research.
