Nine perish in a cataclysmic Learjet crash in Palm Beach County. Governor DeSantis describes the scene as the aircraft plummeted near Greenacres residents.
POLICY WIRE — Greenacres, Florida — A devastating aviation accident occurred Sunday when a Learjet 60 nosedived into a roadway near Military Trail, claiming the lives of all nine individuals on board.
Governor Ron DeSantis described the terrifying descent of the aircraft, noting that the jet appeared to be falling as fast as a missile. The impact left a massive area engulfed in flames and littered with debris across the landscape.
The aircraft, which is valued at approximately $2 million, was reportedly en route to the Bahamas when it struck a tree and brought down power lines. The crash occurred immediately adjacent to the Greenacres mobile home community, prompting an emergency evacuation of roughly 600 residents.
Local authorities have closed Military Trail as investigators begin their probe into the cause of the cataclysmic event. Officials have opened shelters to assist the hundreds of residents who were displaced from their homes by the disaster.
Among the victims is 20-year-old pilot Nathalia Filgueiras, whose mother confirmed the tragic loss following the crash. Religious leaders in the area have already begun organizing memorial services to honor the nine lives lost in the Palm Beach County tragedy.
