POLICY WIRE — Abuja, Nigeria — Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has ordered an investigation into a man accused of creating a fake government agency. This follows a previous incident involving a similar fraudulent operation.
The accused individual is alleged to have impersonated a government official and established an illegitimate agency, purportedly to conduct official business. The investigation aims to uncover the extent of the fraud and identify any accomplices.
President Tinubu emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of governmental institutions. “We will not tolerate any attempts to undermine the credibility of our government,” he stated. “Those responsible will be held accountable.”
This development comes amid growing concerns over corruption and the misuse of public funds in Nigeria. The government has faced criticism for its handling of previous fraud cases, with calls for more stringent measures to prevent such incidents.
The investigation will be conducted by a special task force comprising members from various government agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
Authorities have urged the public to provide any information that may assist in the investigation. “We encourage anyone with knowledge of this fraudulent activity to come forward,” said a spokesperson for the task force.
This is the second such incident in recent months, highlighting a potential systemic issue within Nigeria’s governmental framework. The previous fake agency case resulted in several arrests and ongoing legal proceedings.
In a related development, Ofcom is currently investigating Sky News over allegations of harassment by Nigel Farage. The probe follows complaints from multiple individuals, raising questions about media ethics and regulatory oversight.
