POLICY WIRE — Alexandria, Va. — A former CIA official found with $40 million in gold bars has reached a tentative plea agreement after being charged with stealing public funds by inflating his salary through fraudulent means, according to court records.

The defendant, David J. Rush, was accused of falsely claiming military leave hours and fake academic degrees to boost his pay. Federal prosecutors and his attorney are finalizing the deal, which could avoid a trial involving classified materials. The court extended the indictment deadline to Oct. 8.

Rush was charged in May with theft of public money. Investigators seized the gold bars, along with cash and luxury watches, from his home. His attorney described the gold bars as a ‘sensational tidbit’ unrelated to the charges, but a Justice Department official stated he was not supposed to have them at his residence.
