Nicola Sturgeon Cuts Ties with Jailed Husband Peter Murrell

POLICY WIRE — Edinburgh, Scotland — Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s former first minister, has confirmed she has severed all ties with her estranged husband, Peter Murrell, who’s currently serving a five-year prison sentence for embezzling over £400,000 from the Scottish National Party (SNP).

During a podcast recording at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Sturgeon stated she won’t visit Murrell in prison and has ceased all communication with him. She expressed regret for her previous concern over his wellbeing and mental health, referring to herself as a “mug” for her earlier worries.

Sturgeon revealed that Murrell had lied to her up until the day he pleaded guilty to the embezzlement charges. “He lied to me until the very end,” she said.

The embezzlement scandal has significantly impacted the SNP, leading to investigations — and internal strife. Murrell, the former chief executive of the SNP, admitted to misappropriating party funds, which he claimed were intended for his personal use.
