Netflix’s Pride and Prejudice Adaptation Finally Voices Jane Austen’s Iconic Opening Line
Netflix's new Pride and Prejudice series voices Austen's famous opening line for the first time, featuring Olivia Colman and Dolly Alderton's cinematic vision.
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — Despite numerous screen adaptations, the opening line of Jane Austen’s 1813 novel has never actually been spoken on camera until now.
Netflix’s upcoming series will change that historical oversight, with a new script by Dolly Alderton allowing the iconic prose to be heard for the first time.
The production assigns the famous declaration that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife to Mrs. Bennet, the family matriarch.
Olivia Colman, an Oscar-winning actress, portrays the character and delivers the line in a newly released trailer for the streamer’s adaptation.
Alderton explained that casting the narrative voice with Mrs. Bennet makes narrative sense because the character is consumed by the marital prospects of her daughters.
The creator stated that the marriage question is the central drama of the character’s story and a constant preoccupation whenever a single man enters her orbit.
Alderton described the decision as the most natural choice because the matter dominates Mrs. Bennet’s thoughts at all times.
The showrunner admitted she was initially hesitant to take on the project due to the immense responsibility of adapting such a beloved classic.
Nevertheless, Alderton reflected on the honor and privilege of being entrusted with the storytelling process since then.
The new footage expands on a sneak peek released in February, offering a deeper look at the protagonist, a role previously held by Keira Knightley in the 2005 film.
In the clip, the character displays spirited defiance, declaring that she will either become a governess, a spinster, or a wife and mother.
Jamie Lowden stars as the enigmatic Mr. Darcy, bringing a brooding intensity to the famously reserved love interest previously played by Matthew MacFadyen and Colin Firth.Lowden is currently a subject of significant speculation regarding the role of James Bond after reports indicated final screen tests took place recently.
Jamie Demetriou joins the cast as Mr. Collins, a pompous suitor who is seen knocking over a table of glasses while rejecting advice on how to charm a young lady.
This marks the first major screen adaptation of the novel since Joe Wright’s 2005 film, which earned four Oscar nominations and critical acclaim.
Alderton noted that the story remains timeless because of its emotional resonance, which is as pertinent today as it was in 1812.
Themes of family embarrassment, fear of being left behind, and the judgment of others continue to reflect the human heart in the narrative.
The series is scheduled to debut on Netflix on 3 December.
