POLICY WIRE — Jerusalem, Israel — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani of “fomenting hate” by labeling him a war criminal who should be arrested if he visits the city for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September.

Netanyahu stated his intention to attend the annual UN gathering of world leaders, despite Mamdani’s suggestion that he’s unwelcome. “I will be in New York in September to address the UN General Assembly,” Netanyahu affirmed.

Mamdani had previously stated that while New York City lacks legal authority to arrest Netanyahu, he believes the Israeli leader should face consequences for his actions during the Gaza conflict. “Netanyahu’s presence in New York would be a provocation,” Mamdani remarked.

In response to the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) war-crimes charges against him, Netanyahu dismissed the allegations as “bogus.” “These charges are politically motivated and have no basis in fact or law,” he asserted.

The ICC has been investigating potential war crimes committed by both Israeli forces and Hamas during the Gaza conflict. Netanyahu’s planned visit to the UNGA is expected to draw significant attention — and controversy.
