National Guardsman and Suspect Wounded in Capitol Hill Shooting
A National Guardsman and a suspect were hospitalized following a late-night shooting in Washington, D.C. near the U.S. Capitol. Investigation is underway.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — A National Guardsman and an unidentified suspect were both wounded during a late-night shooting incident near the U.S. Capitol on Sunday.
Interim D.C. police chief Jeffrey Carroll confirmed during a Monday morning press briefing that neither individual sustained life-threatening injuries. Both parties are currently receiving medical care at local hospitals.
The confrontation unfolded shortly after 11 p.m. when National Guard personnel, stationed inside a van in the Capitol Hill district, witnessed a physical altercation. According to Carroll, the Guardsmen attempted to intervene, ordering the suspect to drop a firearm he had brandished.
Authorities stated that the suspect then aimed the weapon at the Guardsmen, prompting them to return fire. The suspect suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, and one member of the National Guard was also struck in the leg during the exchange.
This event follows a federal initiative launched over a year ago by President Trump, which deployed National Guard troops to the capital as part of a broader effort to address rising crime rates.
The city remains on high alert following a deadly ambush near the White House in November 2025, which resulted in the deaths of two National Guardsmen. Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, faces over a dozen federal charges in connection with that attack, including murder of a person assisting a U.S. officer and firearm discharge resulting in death. Lakanwal has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges, which carry potential death penalty sentences.
