Mexico Deploys Troops to Secure Avocado Region After US Halts Imports

POLICY WIRE — Mexico City, Mexico — Mexico has deployed more than 1,500 troops to Michoacán, its primary avocado-producing state, following the United States’ suspension of export inspections. The move aims to enhance security and ensure the continuity of avocado exports, a critical economic sector for the region.

The United States suspended export inspections on February 11, citing security concerns related to the treatment of US Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspectors. The inspectors had reportedly been threatened, leading to the immediate suspension of the inspections necessary for the export of avocados to the US market.

Avocados from Michoacán account for nearly 80% of the avocados imported into the United States, making the region’s security a significant concern for both nations. The deployment of troops is intended to protect USDA inspectors — and facilitate the resumption of export inspections.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador confirmed the deployment, stating that the government is committed to ensuring the safety of inspectors and the stability of the avocado industry. “We’re taking all necessary measures to guarantee the security of our agricultural exports and the well-being of those involved in the process,” he said.

The suspension has caused immediate economic repercussions, with avocado farmers — and exporters facing potential losses. The US market is crucial for Michoacán’s avocado industry, and any prolonged suspension could have severe financial implications.
