POLICY WIRE — City, Country — Meta, the parent company of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, has been ordered by a New Mexico judge to pay a record $567 million fine for its role in harming children. The ruling marks the largest child safety penalty imposed on a social media giant to date.

The judge’s decision comes amid growing concerns over the impact of social media platforms on young users. The fine is intended to address the ways in which Meta’s platforms have allegedly contributed to mental health issues and other harms among children.
