POLICY WIRE — Toronto, Canada — Mel Gibson has publicly apologized following the circulation of a video showing him seemingly mocking an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter during an appearance at FanExpo Canada.
The 70-year-old actor, known for his role in ‘Lethal Weapon,’ was on stage at the Toronto event when the incident took place. In the video, Gibson is seen imitating the interpreter’s hand gestures from behind as he walks onto the stage for an interview.
In a statement to Variety, Gibson expressed regret, describing his actions as’spontaneous thoughtless idiocy.’ He emphasized that there was no malicious intent and offered his apologies to those offended by his behavior.
This is not the first time Gibson has faced controversy. In 2006, he was arrested for drunk driving and made anti-Semitic remarks to police. In 2011, leaked phone calls revealed threatening and racist comments towards his former girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva. More recently, in 2020, Winona Ryder accused him of making homophobic and anti-Semitic statements at a party, allegations which Gibson’s representative denied.
