According to Channel News Asia (CNA), Unilever International stopped supplying Marmite in Singapore, resulting in prices soaring to more than seven times the usual retail cost on some e-commerce sites. The thick, dark yeast extract, commonly used in local dishes and as a toast spread, has left many consumers searching for alternatives.
“We understand several consumers are disappointed by this development,” a Unilever spokesperson told CNA. The company didn’t provide further details on the reasons behind the decision to halt local distribution.
The shortage has prompted a surge in online prices. On popular e-commerce platforms, a jar of Marmite now costs significantly more than its previous retail price of approximately SGD 7. The increased cost has left many long-time users frustrated.
Social media platforms have been abuzz with consumers expressing their dismay. “I can’t believe how expensive Marmite has become overnight,” one user posted on Facebook. Another commented, “I’m going to have to find a substitute. This is ridiculous.”
Some Singaporeans have turned to alternative yeast extracts available in the market, though none have quite replicated the unique taste of Marmite. Local supermarkets are reporting increased sales of these substitutes as consumers seek similar products.
