POLICY WIRE — Nashville, United States — A man armed with a gun and knife was fatally shot by a security officer at the federal courthouse in Nashville, Tennessee, on Thursday, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. when the man, believed to be in his 40s, attempted to fire his weapon but failed before pulling out a knife. A security officer then opened fire, resulting in the man’s death. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The man was from out of state, and investigators have not yet determined why he was at the courthouse. A search of his vehicle found no threats, according to Metro Nashville Police spokesperson Don Aaron. The courthouse, which requires visitors to go through a security checkpoint, is typically staffed by former police officers contracted by the U.S. Marshals Service.
