POLICY WIRE — Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — Former Malaysian actress Zizie Izette Abdul Samad was acquitted by a Kuala Lumpur court on Monday in a high-profile bribery case. The Sessions Court judge, Rosli Ahmad, ruled that the defense had successfully raised reasonable doubt over all three charges faced by Abdul Samad.

The case involved allegations that Abdul Samad had abetted her late husband, senior Barisan Nasional (BN) politician Bung Moktar Radin, in an alleged 2.8 million ringgit (US$685,000) bribery case linked to a government investment.

Following her acquittal, Abdul Samad stated, “I am relieved that the court has seen the truth and cleared my name after such a long and arduous legal battle.” She had faced charges for seven years.

The judge’s decision concluded that the prosecution had failed to provide sufficient evidence to prove Abdul Samad’s involvement in the bribery allegations. “The defense has successfully raised reasonable doubt on all three charges,” Judge Rosli Ahmad declared in his ruling.
