Malaysia Advises Citizens to Postpone Umrah Trips as Saudi Airport Attacks Spark Regional Concerns
Malaysia urges citizens to delay Umrah trips amid Saudi airport attacks. Indonesia calls for vigilance after deadly strikes.
POLICY WIRE — Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — Malaysia has advised its citizens to delay non-essential travel to Saudi Arabia for the Umrah pilgrimage due to rising security threats following a series of deadly attacks on the kingdom’s airports.
The latest incidents include a strike on Saturday that resulted in 13 deaths and over 300 injuries, followed by another attack on Sunday that killed one person and injured about a dozen others. The attacks have raised concerns among regional governments, prompting heightened caution for travelers.
Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan stated that while no security issues had been reported in Mecca, the missile explosion in Riyadh led to the advisory. Indonesia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah also urged its citizens in the country to remain vigilant, avoid risky areas, and follow local guidelines to ensure their safety during the ongoing security challenges.
