POLICY WIRE — London, UK — An analysis has disclosed that 55% of the accounts posting about the recent rioting in Belfast and civil disorder in Southampton on Elon Musk’s X social media platform were based outside the UK. According to the platform’s own location function, of the 8,672 accounts whose combined posts about these events surpassed 1,000 views, only 45.3% were from the UK.
The analysis further revealed that seven out of the 12 most-read posts on the topic originated from the United States. This data underscores the global interest and engagement in the UK’s internal affairs, particularly during times of civil unrest.
The findings highlight the international scope of social media discourse and the influence of overseas users on discussions about UK events. It also raises questions about the localization of social media content and the impact of international perspectives on domestic issues.
