Kherson Civilians Brace for Return of Hostilities as Ceasefire Ends
Kherson residents prepare for renewed fighting as a U.S.-brokered ceasefire ends Sunday. Oleshky evacuation marks the latest shift in Ukraine war.
POLICY WIRE — Kherson, Ukraine — Civilians in the southeastern Kherson region are bracing for the end of a localized ceasefire that has represented the most significant truce between Kyiv and Moscow since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine almost five years ago.
The truce, brokered by U.S. first lady Melania Trump, began early Tuesday and is slated to expire Sunday evening, after a humanitarian operation evacuated residents from the town of Oleshky.
As the ceasefire draws to a close, local communities anticipate a possible resurgence of hostilities, while aid agencies monitor the situation for any sudden changes.
