POLICY WIRE — Nairobi, Kenya — A series of elephant deaths in Kenya has prompted investigations into the possible role of pesticides, though experts remain skeptical about the direct link.
Local authorities reported an unusual number of elephant fatalities in recent weeks, primarily in regions where agricultural activities are prevalent. Initial suspicions pointed towards pesticides used in nearby farms as the potential cause.
However, wildlife experts consulted by the BBC expressed reservations about these conclusions. “While pesticides can be harmful to wildlife, the evidence linking them directly to these deaths is not yet conclusive,” said Dr. Jane Mitchell, a wildlife toxicologist.
The Kenyan Wildlife Service (KWS) has launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the deaths. Samples from the deceased elephants are being analyzed for toxins — and other potential causes.
“We’re taking this situation very seriously and are committed to finding out what’s happening to our elephants,” KWS Director General John Waweru stated.
Environmental groups have called for stricter regulations on pesticide use near wildlife habitats. “This incident highlights the need for better management of agricultural practices in sensitive areas,” said Maria Njeri of the Kenya Conservation Society.
