This contemporary arena stands on the former parking grounds of the iconic Kai Tak Airport, which served the region from 1925 until its closure in 1998. The previous airport gained global notoriety for the uniquely challenging approach required for aircraft landing on its single runway.

Given the challenging local geography, characterized by water on three sides of the runway and mountains to the northeast, incoming planes often executed a perilous low-altitude descent, narrowly passing towering residential buildings. This distinctive flight path produced numerous iconic photographs depicting aircraft appearing to float precariously close to the rooftops of Hong Kong‘s urban landscape.

Beyond Football: A Comprehensive Sports & Event Hub

The Hong Kong national football team has already utilized the Kai Tak Stadium for qualifying matches for the 2027 Asian Cup. Its inaugural competitive game saw Hong Kong triumph 1-0 against India last June, drawing an impressive crowd of 42,570 spectators.

Furthermore, two notable preseason fixtures for the current 2025/26 season were hosted here, with AC Milan defeating Liverpool 4-2 on July 26th, followed by Spurs securing a 1-0 victory over Arsenal just days afterward.
