POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Mr Justice Hildyard, who approved the restructuring plan for TG Jones, formerly WH Smith, has raised concerns about the retailer’s future, citing “very considerable” risks in its turnaround strategy.
In his judgment published on Wednesday, Hildyard noted the restructuring involves the closure of 150 out of 450 stores. “This has all the hallmarks of an adventurous equity play,” he wrote, suggesting that the plan carries significant uncertainties.
The restructuring, approved last month, aims to revive the books-to-paperclips retailer. However, the judge’s comments indicate a cautious outlook on the viability of the strategy.
