POLICY WIRE — Mexico City, Mexico — Jon Rahm has secured his second victory of the current LIV Golf League season at the Mexico City event, a win that comes as persistent rumors about the tour’s financial stability continue to circulate.
The Spanish golfer, 31, demonstrated exceptional form, claiming the title with a commanding six-stroke lead. This impressive performance marks a significant turnaround, as Rahm had not achieved an individual win during the 2025 season.
Rahm’s Resounding Victory
Rahm concluded the tournament with an outstanding total of 21-under par. His final round was particularly strong, featuring a seven-under-par 64 that solidified his dominant position.
The leaderboard reflected a strong Spanish presence, with David Puig finishing six strokes behind Rahm at 15-under, and Josele Ballester securing third place with 14-under par. Zimbabwe’s S. Vincent completed the top four at 12-under.
During his post-victory remarks, Rahm expressed surprise at his own success, especially after his performance at the previous week’s Masters, where he tied for 38th. "A little bit disbelief," Rahm stated. "If you were to tell me last week on Thursday afternoon that I’ll be winning by a six-shot margin this week, I would not believe you because of how bad I played."
LIV Golf’s Future in Question
Rahm’s triumph unfolded against a backdrop of escalating reports suggesting that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) may withdraw its financial backing from the breakaway golf tour. Such a move would undeniably cast a shadow over LIV Golf’s long-term viability.
Despite these concerns, LIV Golf chief executive Scott O’Neil has publicly dismissed the anxieties. In an internal email, which the BBC reportedly reviewed, O’Neil assured staff that the season would proceed "uninterrupted and at full throttle."
Further reinforcing this stance, the tour has already confirmed its intent to return to Mexico’s Chapultepec Golf Club for next year’s event.

Disrupting the Professional Golf Landscape
Since its inception in 2022, LIV Golf has been a significant disruptor, triggering a "civil war" within professional golf. The tour successfully attracted numerous star players away from the established PGA Tour by offering substantial financial incentives.
The landscape of professional sports, particularly golf, has seen considerable shifts with new funding models emerging. Similar dynamics are observed across various leagues globally, as organizations seek competitive advantages and player retention strategies.
In 2023, the PGA Tour and DP World Tour announced a proposed merger agreement with the PIF. However, more than a year later, the integration of these entities has yet to materialize, leaving many aspects of professional golf’s future unresolved.
Team Victory and Upcoming Schedule
Beyond his individual accomplishment, Rahm also guided his team, Legion XIII, to their inaugural team category win of the season. Key contributions came from Tyrrell Hatton and Tom McKibbin, both finishing at 11-under, alongside Caleb Surratt, who was two-under.
Notably, Bryson DeChambeau, winner of the two preceding events, had to withdraw from the final round due to a wrist injury. The LIV Golf League is set to continue its schedule from May 7-10 with LIV Golf Virginia in Washington D.C.
