POLICY WIRE — Kolkata, India — Star fast bowler Jofra Archer achieved a significant milestone in the IPL 2026 season, drawing level with Mohammed Shami‘s impressive record during the Rajasthan Royals‘ high-stakes encounter with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens on Sunday.
Archer’s Historic First-Ball Feat
Representing the Rajasthan Royals, Archer opened the bowling in the second innings and delivered a sensational first ball, dismissing KKR opener Tim Seifert for a ‘golden duck’. This remarkable delivery marked Archer‘s fifth instance of taking a wicket with the very first ball of an IPL innings, effectively matching the long-standing record held by fellow pacer Mohammed Shami.
His recent form has been exceptional, as this achievement follows similar first-ball dismissals in RR‘s two preceding matches. On April 10, he accounted for Phil Salt against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and then dismissed Abhishek Sharma on April 13 when playing against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Match Dynamics: Spin Dominates Batting
Earlier in the day, after winning the toss, the Rajasthan Royals opted to bat first. However, their innings faced significant disruption from KKR‘s spin duo, Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine. Together, they secured five crucial wickets, restricting Rajasthan Royals to a total of 155 for nine.
The situation could have deteriorated further for RR had KKR not allowed some runs during the power play. Initially, Rajasthan displayed a strong start, reaching 63 without any loss of wickets, primarily driven by rapid scoring from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi against the pace attack, maintaining a run rate exceeding ten runs per over.
The momentum shifted dramatically with the introduction of spin bowling. Despite Sooryavanshi hitting a six off Narine‘s second ball, the spinner responded by bowling five consecutive dot deliveries. Subsequently, Chakravarthy claimed his 200th T20 wicket by dismissing Sooryavanshi with his fourth delivery, caught by Ramandeep Singh at deep midwicket.
From a commanding position, the Rajasthan Royals‘ innings faltered, eventually reaching 118 for four after 15 overs, with their scoring rate significantly dropping below eight runs per over.
