Jamie Dornan Addresses Pressure of Stepping Into Aragorn’s Boots for The Hunt for Gollum
Jamie Dornan discusses the challenge of playing Aragorn in The Hunt for Gollum, following Viggo Mortensen's iconic performance in the original trilogy.
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — Actor Jamie Dornan has publicly addressed the significant weight of expectation he faces as he prepares to portray Aragorn in the upcoming film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
Dornan acknowledged the daunting nature of succeeding Viggo Mortensen, who defined the character throughout Peter Jackson’s original cinematic trilogy. In a recent interview with the Italian publication L’Officiel, Dornan expressed his commitment to the role while noting that he has been tasked with bringing a super-iconic figure to life.
The actor emphasized his deep respect for his predecessor, stating that for him, Aragorn will always be just Viggo. He added that he feels honored to attempt to recapture some of the energy Mortensen originally brought to the screen, clarifying that he has no intention of trying to outdo the original performance.
The production will feature several returning stars from the franchise, including Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, and Lee Pace as Thranduil. The film is being directed by Andy Serkis, who also famously portrayed Gollum in the previous installments.
Set in the timeline between The Hobbit trilogy and The Fellowship of the Ring, the narrative follows Aragorn’s mission to locate Gollum before the creature can disclose the whereabouts of the One Ring to Sauron. The screenplay is a collaborative effort by original trilogy writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, working alongside Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.
Earlier this year, Serkis highlighted the importance of maintaining the high standard of talent associated with Middle-earth projects. He expressed his delight in welcoming back beloved performers while integrating new talent into the expansive world created by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Regarding a potential return to the franchise, Mortensen previously told GQ in May 2024 that he would only consider reprising the role if it were appropriate for his current age. He later clarified to The Hollywood Reporter in June 2024 that his participation would depend entirely on the quality of the script.
The Hunt for Gollum is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on December 17, 2027.
