Jack Antonoff Criticizes Ed Sheeran Over Macklemore Tour Removal
Music producer Jack Antonoff slams Ed Sheeran for his handling of the Macklemore tour controversy, urging artists to resist billionaire influence.
POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Music producer Jack Antonoff has publicly criticized Ed Sheeran regarding the recent controversy surrounding the British singer’s Loop Tour. The tension stems from the removal of rapper Macklemore from the tour following his vocal support for Palestine amid the ongoing conflict with Israel.
Macklemore’s departure from the tour was reportedly orchestrated after billionaire Robert Kraft organized a group of stadium owners to prevent the rapper from performing at their venues. While Sheeran has maintained that he was not complicit in the decision to drop Macklemore, Antonoff expressed strong disapproval of the situation during an interview with The Guardian published on Sunday.
Regarding Macklemore’s onstage comments, the Bleachers frontman stated, It’s not in any way a strange, uncomfortable or controversial thing to say, it’s a deeply human thing to say. Antonoff further challenged the influence of venue promoters, remarking, “They’re going to let some f***ing promoter tell me what I can say? Don’t book me. I’ll play for free outside.”
Antonoff argued that Sheeran missed a significant opportunity to take a stand against corporate pressure. He suggested that the singer should have canceled the tour and performed for free outside the venues to raise funds, rather than allowing a billionaire to dictate the terms of his performances. He emphasized that the issue reflects a broader societal problem where billionaires exert control over public discourse.
Following Macklemore’s removal, all four of Sheeran’s supporting acts withdrew from the tour in a show of solidarity. Sheeran also faced a decline in his social media following and public criticism regarding his perceived inaction. During a subsequent concert in Philadelphia, an emotional Sheeran told the audience that he felt abandoned by friends and family during what he described as one of the worst weeks of his life.
Sheeran addressed the conflict directly during his Philadelphia performance, stating, What happened in Israel and at the Nova Music Festival on October 7 was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain. He added, “What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate.”
Macklemore has since reaffirmed his position on the conflict and announced plans for a Free Palestine tour scheduled for this month. Representatives for Ed Sheeran have been contacted for comment regarding Antonoff’s remarks.
