POLICY WIRE — Rome, Italy — Italian prosecutors have launched a formal investigation into Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz alongside several high-ranking military, police, and prison authorities regarding the handling of Gaza flotilla participants.
Announced on Friday, the broadening legal inquiry stems directly from formal grievances lodged by 50 Italian nationals who faced detention by Israeli authorities following two separate Global Sumud Flotilla expeditions.
Rome officials confirmed that the expanded probe now encompasses Defense Minister Israel Katz, military chief IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, and far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who was the initial focus of the inquiry.
According to the Rome prosecutors’ office, the ongoing judicial examination centers on suspected offenses including torture, kidnapping, and personal injury connected to the treatment of the detained activists.
