Israeli Police Arrest Armed Man Near Left-Wing Leader Yair Golan on Election Day
Israeli police arrest a man carrying a knife near left-wing leader Yair Golan during a crucial election day, sparking sharp political reactions.
POLICY WIRE — Tel Aviv, Israel — Israeli law enforcement detained a man carrying a blade during an event for left-wing politician Yair Golan on Thursday, coinciding with a high-stakes national election.
The incident unfolded as citizens cast their ballots in a pivotal vote, with Golan’s political faction, The Democrats, characterizing the occurrence as a suspected stabbing attempt.
According to the party’s account, an unknown individual wearing a jacket approached Golan in an aggressive manner while he was rallying supporters in Tel Aviv earlier in the week.
Golan’s detail of security guards intercepted the man, causing a large knife to slip out from under his garments and drop to the pavement.
The security personnel quickly overpowered the individual prior to any escalation, subsequently notifying law enforcement who arrived promptly to take the suspect into custody.
Law enforcement officials released a statement confirming the apprehension of a suspect carrying a blade, though they clarified that contrary to initial reports, no active stabbing attempt occurred.
Golan serves as the head of Israel’s primary left-wing party, The Democrats, which incorporates factions from the country’s formerly dominant Labour Party.
Operating further to the left politically, he maintains an electoral partnership led by former military chief Gadi Eisenkot.
Notably, Golan stands as the sole candidate representing a major Israeli political faction who continues to advocate for a two-state solution alongside Palestinians.
Police authorities explained that while accompanying the politician, officers spotted a suspicious item hidden beneath the coat of a person standing nearby and promptly conducted a search that revealed the weapon.
The detained individual, identified by authorities as a Jerusalem resident in his 20s, was transported for interrogation following the arrest.
Addressing the public after the confrontation, Golan declared that violence and incitement would not succeed in intimidating them, while pointing the finger at what he termed the poison machine operated by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
He urged all citizens who value national security and democratic principles to head to the polling stations immediately.
The confrontation followed an ongoing dispute regarding the adequacy of security protection provided to Golan by the state.
His party noted that it took an extended legal struggle before the Shin Bet internal security agency formally assumed oversight of his protection.
Representatives for the party emphasized the dangerous potential of the situation had their campaign not successfully pressured the Shin Bet into taking charge of Golan’s security detail.
