Indonesian Students Stage Nationwide Protests Over Forest Fire Crisis and Government Policy
Hundreds of Indonesian students protest President Prabowo Subianto's administration, demanding urgent action on forest fires and rising living costs.
POLICY WIRE — Jakarta, Indonesia — Hundreds of students and civil society members mobilized across Indonesia on Wednesday to voice their opposition to the policies of President Prabowo Subianto. The demonstrations, which took place in the capital of Jakarta and several other cities, focused heavily on the government’s management of persistent forest fires.
Protesters gathered at a prominent Jakarta roundabout, with many donning gas masks to symbolize the severity of the air quality crisis. Demonstrators held signs calling for the administration to officially classify the ongoing blazes as a national disaster.
The wildfire crisis, exacerbated by the El Niño weather pattern, has severely impacted peatlands and triggered widespread health concerns. Smoke from these fires, which are frequently attributed to destructive agricultural practices, has sickened hundreds of thousands of people and drifted into neighboring countries.
Tensions have been building for several days, with earlier protests reported in Palangkaraya on Friday and a gathering in central Jakarta on October 20. During these earlier events, activists explicitly demanded the resignation of both President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka.
Beyond the environmental crisis, the wave of unrest reflects broader public dissatisfaction. Students are increasingly vocal about their grievances regarding the rising cost of living and concerns over the state of civil liberties under the current leadership.
