Ikea Debuts Second-Hand Marketplace Offering Furniture at 60% Discount
Ikea launches a new peer-to-peer marketplace for pre-owned furniture, allowing Ikea Family members to buy and sell items at significant discounts.
POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Swedish retail giant Ikea has officially entered the resale market with the launch of a dedicated platform for pre-owned furniture and homewares. The initiative aims to provide customers with greater access to affordable home furnishings, with items typically priced 60 percent lower than their brand-new counterparts.
The marketplace is currently exclusive to members of the company’s Ikea Family loyalty program. While the platform serves as a direct competitor to established resale sites like Vinted and eBay, it excludes specific categories such as mattresses, food, and appliances from the listings.
To simplify the selling process, users can scan their items to generate automatic product descriptions, professional photography, measurements, and assembly guides. Sellers retain the flexibility to set their own prices, though the platform provides recommended figures based on the item’s condition relative to its original cost.
Financial incentives are built into the system, allowing sellers to receive payment in cash or via an Ikea gift card, the latter of which includes a 15 percent bonus. Additionally, buyers can request free spare parts, such as wall-securing brackets, to ensure the safety and longevity of their purchases.

The platform currently waives the Buyers Protection Fee, though the company noted that this policy will eventually change. This new marketplace builds upon the retailer’s existing Buy Back scheme, which debuted in 2021, with plans to integrate the two services in Spain and Portugal by late December.
Greg Lucas, sustainability manager at Ikea UK and Ireland, noted that consumer habits regarding home furnishing are shifting. He stated: The way people furnish their homes has changed. Whether they are moving, redecorating or looking for a particular piece, more customers are considering pre-owned furniture alongside new and are actively searching for items that can help create a home that feels personal to them.
Lucas added: “Ikea products are designed to be used, maintained and enjoyed over time, and the second-hand marketplace, as well as our in-store buyback service, gives people a straightforward way to pass on items as their needs change, with the practical information they need to buy and sell with confidence.”
