Co-Sleeping with Pets May Harm Sleep Quality, Study Finds
New research shows co-sleeping with pets may impact sleep quality. Experts offer tips for better rest.
POLICY WIRE — New York, United States — A recent study published in Scientific Reports highlights that sharing a bedroom with pets could have a negative effect on sleep quality, particularly when it involves dogs.
The research, conducted by a team of researchers, surveyed over 1,500 American adults to explore how sleeping in the same room as pets affects their rest. The findings revealed that individuals who shared a room with their pets reported worse sleep and more symptoms of insomnia compared to those who did not.

Despite these results, 93% of participants who slept with their pets believed the animals had either a positive or neutral impact on their sleep. The study suggests that while pets often provide emotional support and mental health benefits during the day, their presence at night might interfere with restful sleep. Experts recommend strategies such as using a spacious mattress, keeping bedding clean, and maintaining a consistent bedtime routine to improve sleep when sharing a room with a pet.
