Iconic Ocean City Ferris Wheel Set for Demolition After Decades of Service
Ocean City's historic Ferris wheel to be dismantled, sparking nostalgia and debate over its legacy.
POLICY WIRE — Ocean City, New Jersey — A beloved landmark on the New Jersey coast is set to be dismantled, marking the end of an era for residents and visitors who cherished its presence for decades.
The iconic Ferris wheel that once stood at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier, a central attraction in Ocean City, will soon be removed. The structure, which has endured years of exposure to salt air, is now deemed too deteriorated to be preserved intact.
Real estate developer Eustace Mita, who acquired the site in 2021, explained that the Ferris wheel’s components have fused due to corrosion, making it impossible to disassemble and reassemble elsewhere. Despite initial plans to renovate and elevate the structure, the project remains unapproved, while legal challenges continue to oppose the site’s redevelopment into a 252-room hotel.
