POLICY WIRE — Hong Kong, China — Hong Kong visitors spent HK$5.8 billion (US$739 million) during major events in the first half of 2023, averaging HK$3,314 per traveler, according to the city’s finance chief.

Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po stated in his weekly blog that approximately 1.75 million visitors were attracted to the city’s more than 130 events from January to June. This influx of tourists generated around HK$5.8 billion in spending and contributed HK$3.3 billion in economic value added.

“Art, cultural — and mega-events have lifted the overall economic activity,” Chan noted.
