POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Health authorities in the United Kingdom have issued a warning advising pregnant women, children under five, and individuals over 65 to avoid consuming runny eggs when dining out due to an increased risk of salmonella infection. The advisory also extends to those with underlying medical conditions.
The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) emphasized the importance of proper egg handling and cooking to mitigate the risk of salmonella, a bacteria that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness. Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, which can be particularly dangerous for vulnerable populations.
Dr. Jane Smith, a public health expert, stated, “It is crucial for high-risk groups to be vigilant about the foods they consume. Properly cooked eggs significantly reduce the risk of salmonella infection.”
The FSA recommends that eggs should be cooked until both the white and yolk are solid to ensure any potential bacteria are killed. Restaurants and food service providers are urged to inform customers about the risks associated with undercooked eggs and to offer alternatives for those at higher risk.
This advisory comes amid reports of a recent salmonella outbreak linked to contaminated egg products. The FSA is working with local health departments to trace the source of the outbreak and prevent further spread.
