Haley Stevens Joins GOP Senate Candidate Mike Rogers Amid Growing Friction with Abdul El-Sayed
Rep. Haley Stevens supports Republican Mike Rogers in Detroit as tensions with Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed intensify before the Michigan election.
POLICY WIRE — Detroit, USA — Democratic Representative Haley Stevens made an appearance alongside Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers on Sunday, highlighting a deepening divide with the Democratic nominee, Abdul El-Sayed as the race enters its final stage.
Stevens was seen with Rogers at a Detroit church, marking a significant moment for the representative following her narrow defeat to El-Sayed in the Michigan Democratic primary back this past August.
The friction stems from a request last week in which Stevens demanded that El-Sayed denounce an advertisement from an external organization. The ad linked U.S. military assistance to Israel with the cost of groceries, a claim Stevens labeled as antisemitic.
El-Sayed responded by accusing Stevens of relitigating a primary that concluded three months ago. However, he noted that he did not produce the advertisement himself and stated he does not agree with its messaging.
While El-Sayed is attempting to refocus the campaign on the core issues facing Michigan voters in his challenge against Rogers, the Republican candidate used the opportunity to praise Stevens.
In a social media post on Friday, Rogers commended Stevens for addressing the concerns of Jewish voters and for her leadership.
“Representative Haley Stevens is a courageous leader who deserves the respect of every Michigan voter,” Rogers stated. He further noted that she has acted with class since the primary, which he highlighted showed a majority of voters did not select her party’s candidate.
Adding to the complex dynamic, Stevens’ fiancé, Jason Turkish, announced last week that he intends to cast his vote for Rogers.
