Gregory Meeks Announces Bid to Reclaim House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair
New York Rep. Gregory Meeks seeks to retake the House Foreign Affairs Committee chair, vowing oversight of Trump-era corruption and a pro‑Israel stance.
POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — Representative Gregory Meeks of New York formally announced his intention to pursue the chairmanship of the House Foreign Affairs Committee for the upcoming Congress.
In a Dear Colleague letter, Meeks outlined a plan to make oversight of alleged lawlessness and corruption within the former Trump administration the centerpiece of the committee’s agenda, pledging to summon senior officials for testimony.
Meeks has served as the Democratic ranking member of the panel since the party lost the chair in 2023 and has led the Democratic side since 2021; under the customary seniority rule, he would become chair if Democrats regain control of the House in January.
Political observers note that his voting record consistently favors Israel, a stance likely to influence the committee’s future deliberations.
The congressman, born September 25, 1953, is a lawyer who first won a House seat in 1998 and has represented New York’s 5th district since 2013; he chaired the Foreign Affairs Committee from 2021 to 2023 and continues as its ranking member.
