POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has officially commenced an external review into its historical dealings with Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender, confirming the development on Wednesday.
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, the sole remaining founder of the influential philanthropic organization he established with Melinda French Gates, is facing intensified examination regarding his appearances in Justice Department documents linked to the investigation of the disgraced financier.
This comprehensive external probe represents the non-profit’s most explicit endeavor to confront the connections that have overshadowed its significant initiatives in global health, including combating preventable maternal and child mortalities and managing critical infectious diseases.
Foundation Confirms External Probe
“In March, with the endorsement of our chair, Bill Gates, and our independent Governing Board, Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman initiated an external review to evaluate the foundation’s past interactions with Epstein, alongside our current protocols for scrutinizing and establishing new philanthropic collaborations,” a statement from the Gates Foundation clarified.
The initial report concerning the internal staff memo, which outlined details of this review, was published by The Wall Street Journal.
Recent Organizational Shifts
This scrutiny arrives as the prominent philanthropic entity has already been undergoing a period of substantial organizational change. In January, the Gates Foundation announced plans to cap its operational expenditures and progressively reduce its workforce by up to 500 positions, roughly 20% of its total staff, by 2030.
This move follows the previous year’s announcement that the foundation intends to conclude its operations in 2045, a timeline accelerated from earlier expectations.
Insights from Justice Department Files
Files released by the Justice Department include various communications between Gates and Epstein, specifically email exchanges pertaining to philanthropic endeavors. These documents also feature calendar entries detailing meeting dates and photographs of Gates at events where both men were present.
Gates has not been implicated in any wrongdoing concerning his association with Epstein. He maintains no prior knowledge of Epstein’s criminal activities and asserts that their meetings were solely focused on philanthropic discussions.
In a prior statement issued in February, the foundation acknowledged that “a small number” of its employees met with Epstein based on his “claims that he could mobilize significant philanthropic resources for global health and development.” The foundation affirmed that no joint fund was ever established, and no financial payments were ever made to Epstein by the organization.
“The foundation regrets having any employees interact with Epstein in any way,” the previous statement declared.
Investor Warren Buffett’s Reservations
The disclosures contained within these files are being closely monitored by some of the Gates Foundation’s earliest and most devoted supporters. Warren Buffett, the renowned investor who annually donates a portion of his Berkshire Hathaway shares to the non-profit, recently shared his perspective on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”
Last month, Buffett stated, “it’s clear there was a lot I didn’t know” regarding the foundation’s dealings. Buffett, who stepped down as a trustee of the foundation in 2021, typically completes his annual donation around late June.
However, he indicated that he would “wait and see what unfolds” concerning the contents of the Justice Department’s documents and upcoming congressional hearings. He highlighted the foundation’s substantial endowment, valued at $86 billion, and noted Gates’ considerable personal wealth.
“So, in any event, I’ll just wait and see. And there’s three and a half million, or whatever it is pages – I mean, it is astounding,” Buffett remarked about the extensive Epstein files.
A spokesperson for the Gates Foundation described Buffett as “an extraordinarily generous partner” for nearly two decades in a statement to The Associated Press on Wednesday. “We are deeply grateful for his support, which has enabled us to accelerate progress on some of the world’s toughest challenges that would not otherwise have been possible,” the spokesperson added.
The Gates Foundation anticipates its board and management will receive an update on the Epstein review later this summer. The third-party investigators conducting this assessment have not yet been publicly identified.
