France Seizes Another Suspected Shadow Fleet Tanker Amid Escalating Sanctions Enforcement
France seizes another suspected Russian shadow fleet tanker, escalating tensions over sanctions enforcement. Moscow calls it 'piracy.'
POLICY WIRE — Paris, France — French naval forces have detained a second oil tanker linked to Russia’s covert operations bypassing Western sanctions, marking the latest in a series of high-stakes confrontations between Paris and Moscow.
The vessel, identified as the DF Peak, was seized on Tuesday and is believed to be part of Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, a network of ships allegedly used to evade international trade restrictions. The move has drawn sharp condemnation from Russian officials, who labeled the action an act of “piracy.”
This incident follows a pattern of increased European efforts to intercept vessels suspected of transporting sanctioned goods. Since early 2026, nine such tankers have been seized across Europe, with France playing a central role. Earlier this month, a similar vessel was released after paying a substantial fine, highlighting the ongoing legal and diplomatic challenges in enforcing global sanctions against Russia.
