POLICY WIRE — PARIS, FRANCE — The French government has reported a significant increase in drowning incidents, attributing the rise to the recent heatwaves. A government minister has cautioned the public about the dangers of engaging in water activities during extreme heat.
Since June 19, 301 drowning deaths have been recorded across the country. The minister highlighted that individuals have been taking unnecessary risks by entering the water despite the hazardous conditions.
“The current heatwave has led to a dangerous situation where people are more likely to seek relief in water, often without considering the risks involved,” stated the minister. “We urge everyone to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary exposure to water during these extreme temperatures.”
Authorities are working on implementing additional safety measures and increasing public awareness about the dangers of heatwaves. Lifeguard services have been bolstered in popular swimming areas, and warning signs have been posted at various water bodies.
The public has been advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and seek shade during the hottest parts of the day. Children and the elderly are particularly at risk and should be closely monitored.
