Former Gymnastics Coach Sentenced to 90 Years for Secretly Recording Minors
Sean Gardner receives a 90-year prison sentence for filming young gymnasts in Mississippi. Explore the details of this landmark child exploitation case.
POLICY WIRE — Purvis, Mississippi — A former youth gymnastics coach has been sentenced to 90 years in federal prison after being convicted of secretly recording young students while they were undressing and using the restroom at a Mississippi facility.
U.S. District Judge Kristi Johnson handed down the maximum possible penalty to 39-year-old Sean Gardner on Wednesday. The sentence, which includes 30 years for each of the three federal child pornography production counts to which he pleaded guilty, effectively serves as a life term.
The investigation into Gardner began after federal authorities recovered digital evidence from his computers while probing separate sexual abuse allegations in Iowa. FBI agents discovered approximately 50 videos and 400 photos, including footage showing Gardner turning off the recording device.
Court documents reveal that Gardner placed a hidden camera in a Purvis, Mississippi, gymnastics studio between December 2017 and April 2018. Investigators confirmed the content included close-up imagery of at least 10 minors.
While Gardner previously served as a director and coach at Chow’s Gymnastics and Dance Institute in West Des Moines, Iowa, he has not faced formal charges regarding the allegations made by former students there. Law enforcement officials indicated they would evaluate next steps following the conclusion of this federal case.
Former students have described a culture where inappropriate physical contact was common. Liberty Raines, who trained at the Mississippi gym, recalled that Gardner would kiss students on the forehead and touch them inappropriately, noting that such rituals were normalized at the time.
The case has intensified scrutiny on USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Center for SafeSport. Civil lawsuits allege that oversight bodies were alerted to Gardner’s grooming behavior as early as 2017 but failed to intervene for years.
SafeSport eventually suspended Gardner in 2022 following a sexual abuse report, leading to his termination from the Iowa institute. The center later stated that leadership at the gym had been aware of misconduct allegations but neglected to report them as required by policy.
