POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — A former senior CIA official has pleaded guilty in Virginia to embezzling over $40 million in gold bars and luxury real estate, using his position to enrich himself through fraudulent means, according to court filings.
David J. Rush, 49, of Ashburn, Virginia, admitted to fabricating a classified government program to justify the purchase of high-end properties in Florida and acquiring hundreds of gold bars from federal assets. The scheme resulted in approximately $194 million in losses to the U.S. government, prosecutors said.

Rush faces up to 20 years in prison for wire fraud and will be sentenced on January 28 in Alexandria, Virginia. He was arrested after investigators discovered 300 gold bars, $2 million in cash, and luxury watches at his home, according to an FBI affidavit.
