Florida Man Charged With Murder in 2011 Disappearance of Ex-Fiancée
Dale Smith Jr. faces second-degree murder charges in the 2011 disappearance of Michelle Parker. Orlando police cite new evidence in the cold case.
POLICY WIRE — Orlando, Florida — Authorities in Orlando have taken a man into custody on a second-degree murder charge, marking a significant development in the nearly 15-year-old disappearance of his former fiancée.
Michelle Parker, who was 33 at the time, vanished on Nov. 17, 2011. Her disappearance occurred on the same day an episode of the reality television program The People’s Court aired, featuring a heated argument between Parker and the suspect, Dale Smith Jr., regarding an engagement ring.
Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith confirmed the arrest on Wednesday, noting that Smith Jr. was the final person known to have seen or communicated with Parker. The two shared two children, and Parker had dropped the children off at the suspect’s residence shortly before she went missing.
Although Parker’s SUV was discovered abandoned in an Orlando parking lot the day after she disappeared, she has never been located. Her cellphone was later recovered by divers from a local lake in December 2011.
Chief Smith explained that the department spent the last year conducting a renewed, intensive review of the case. Investigators reexamined previous testimony, analyzed conflicting statements, and utilized modern digital forensics to process evidence.
Detective Phillip McMican noted that Smith Jr. had been interviewed multiple times and participated in several depositions over the years. McMican stated that the suspect provided inconsistent answers to specific questions during these sessions.
Advancements in technology allowed police to better interpret evidence from vehicles, electronic devices, phones, and computers that were not available 15 years ago. While officials did not disclose the exact nature of the breakthrough, they confirmed that new evidence was uncovered within the past year.
Police stated that while Parker remains missing, all available evidence points to Dale Smith Jr. as the individual responsible for her murder. Smith Jr. has been considered a suspect in the case since shortly after the disappearance.
