Flávio Bolsonaro Flees to U.S. Following Election Loss, Vows to Lead Opposition
Defeated Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro arrives in Miami after election loss to Lula da Silva, vowing to lead the opposition from the U.S.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — Following his defeat in the recent presidential runoff election, right-wing candidate Flávio Bolsonaro has departed Brazil and arrived in Miami with his family.
The 45-year-old politician, a known ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, executed a secretive transit through Argentina and Ecuador before reaching the United States. Despite his loss to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro has refused to formally concede the race.
Bolsonaro continues to maintain that he is the true elected president of Brazil, even as he prepares to organize opposition efforts from abroad. His departure comes shortly after President Donald Trump signaled he would not intervene in the political fallout.
