POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — A federal court ruling on Tuesday has authorized the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to terminate legal protections that have shielded more than 5,000 Ethiopian immigrants from deportation. The decision permits the Trump administration to proceed with ending the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for these individuals.
The TPS program, established to provide temporary relief to immigrants from countries experiencing ongoing armed conflict, environmental disasters, or other extraordinary conditions, has been a subject of intense debate under the Trump administration. The administration has sought to end TPS for several countries, arguing that conditions have improved sufficiently for immigrants to return.
The court’s decision specifically addressed the case of Ethiopian immigrants, who were granted TPS following political unrest and human rights concerns in Ethiopia. The ruling allows the Department of Homeland Security to move forward with its plan to phase out the protections, which were initially set to expire on December 31, 2019.
Immigrant advocacy groups have criticized the decision, arguing that conditions in Ethiopia have not sufficiently improved to warrant the termination of TPS. They contend that many Ethiopian immigrants would face significant risks if returned to their home country.
This decision follows a series of actions by the Trump administration to reduce immigration, including attempts to end TPS for nationals of other countries and efforts to tighten asylum policies. The administration has consistently argued that its immigration policies are necessary to protect national security and ensure the integrity of the U.S. immigration system.
