Federal Employees Granted Permission to Use TikTok on Government Phones

POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Federal employees have been granted permission to use TikTok on government-issued phones, marking a significant policy reversal. The decision comes after an initial ban on the social media app due to security concerns.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) announced the updated policy, stating that federal employees can now download and use the app on their work devices. This change follows a comprehensive review of the app’s security measures and its impact on government operations.

However, the policy does not extend to Members of Congress, who remain prohibited from having TikTok on their official phones. The ban for Congress was implemented separately and is still in effect.

A DCMS spokesperson said, “After thorough evaluation, we have determined that TikTok can be used securely on government devices. Appropriate safeguards are in place to protect sensitive information.”

The initial ban was put in place amid concerns over data privacy and the app’s ties to Chinese company ByteDance. Critics argued that the app could be used to collect user data and potentially compromise national security.

In contrast, the continued ban for Congress members highlights the differing security standards and risk assessments between federal employees and lawmakers. The House of Representatives passed a bill in March to remove TikTok from all federal devices, though this policy has now been adjusted for federal employees.

This policy change arrives as the UK government faces increasing scrutiny over its approach to social media regulation and data protection. The decision to allow TikTok on government phones may set a precedent for other social media apps and their usage within government agencies.
